prepare iPhone for sale

You have bought a new smartphone and now you want to prepare your iPhone for sale? Then in this article we will show you how to prepare your iPhone for sale in 6 steps and how to secure your data or safely remove your data – in other words, how to reset it to factory settings. Let’s get started!

Ürepare iPhone for sale – before we start

Now, before we start preparing your iPhone for sale, you should have a few things ready that we will need in a moment:

  • Your new iPhone
  • Your old iPhone
  • Your Apple Watch (if available)
  • Your Apple ID (mail address and password you used at Apple)
  • The so-called SIM tool (the small metal tool to remove your SIM card)

Do you have everything together? Then we can now start to backup your old iPhones and then gradually reset them to factory settings.

Step 1: Backup your data

First of all, you should back up your data to transfer it to your new smartphone afterwards. This is very easy, because the iPhone does the entire process on its own. It backs up your data, settings, and apps so you can get right back to work on your new iPhone. It even reinstalls your apps, sets settings and restores photos automatically. So you don’t have to worry about losing anything. So you should backup your iPhone first and restore the backup to the new iPhone. Then check if everything worked and then proceed to the second step in this guide.

Step 2: Disable “Find My iPhone

You may have “Find myiPhone” enabled on your iPhone. If your iPhone is lost or stolen, you can easily locate it and even remotely wipe your data. A handy feature, but one that makes it difficult for the new buyer to use your iPhone – because the feature also ensures that the iPhone can’t be used by strangers. So first of all, we’ll check if the feature is enabled on your iPhone, and if it is, we’ll enable it together. Here’s how we’ll do it:

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Click on your name at the top
  3. Scroll down to the point “Where is?” and click on it
  4. Now select the item “Find my iPhone”
  5. Now deactivate all three items, if they are activated. Just click on the sliders until they turn gray.

We will now make sure once again that everything has worked. Follow these steps:

  1. Open the website appleid.apple.com and log in with your Apple ID (mail address and password you chose at Apple)
  2. Once you are logged in, scroll down to the “Devices” section
  3. See if your iPhone is still there. If it is, click on it and select “Remove from account”. After that, the iPhone will no longer be linked to your Apple ID.

Step 3: Log out from iCloud and iTunes Store.

Now that you have successfully deactivated “Find my iPhone”, you can make sure that the buyer can use your iPhone. We also recommend you to log out from iCloud and iTunes Store. In principle, it is not a problem if you do not log out, because the buyer can no longer access your data after the factory reset. Nevertheless, your account would be suggested to the buyer after the first login, which is now necessarily nice. To sign out of the iCloud and iTunes Store, you proceed like this:

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Click on your name at the top
  3. Scroll down to the bottom and select “Sign out”. You will now be logged out of all services. Of course, the data stored in the iCloud will not be lost. You are just no longer logged in with this iPhone.

Step 4: Unpair Apple Watch

Do you own an Apple Watch and have it paired with your iPhone? If yes, then you should follow these steps. Otherwise, you can just skip this point. Before we start, you should make sure that the Apple Watch and your iPhone are together.

  1. Open the Watch app on your iPhone
  2. Click on “All Apple Watches” in the top left corner
  3. Select the “i” to the right of your Apple Watch
  4. Now click on “Unpair Apple Watch”. After that, you can pair your Apple Watch with your new iPhone.

Step 5: Securely wipe data from iPhone

If you have now successfully completed all the previous steps, you should now have all your data on your new iPhone, logged out of “Find My iPhone” as well as iCloud and iTunes, and unpair your potential Apple Watch. Then we can now safely wipe your old smartphone and thus prepare the iPhone for sale. Wiping your data will also work automatically once we start the process. So now take your old iPhone in hand and proceed like this:

  1. Open the “Settings” app
  2. Scroll to the “General” item and click on it
  3. Swipe down to the bottom and click on “Reset”
  4. Now select “Erase all content & settings”, so that your iPhone is really erased completely
  5. Confirm the process with “Erase now”.

Your iPhone will now be reset. This may take a while. When the process is finished, the iPhone will greet you with “Hello”. You can then turn off the iPhone.

Step 6: Prepare and pack iPhone for sale

If you want to prepare the iPhone for sale, you will surely clean it thoroughly now to give the buyer the best buying experience. It is best to use a screen cleaning cloth to remove your fingerprints. You can also blow dust residue out of the ports, because there is often a lot of dust collected by carrying it in your pocket.

Before you put the iPhone and its accessories into the box, make sure to remove your SIM card, if you haven’t already done so. Typically, you end up forgetting the SIM card and then have to get it back from the buyer somehow. That won’t happen to you, though.

Oops, forgot to delete your data?

You wanted to prepare your iPhone for sale but forgot to delete your data at the end? Then we can delete the data remotely. For that you should have activated Find My iPhone – did you do that? If yes, then we can now go to iCloud.com and log in there with your Apple ID (mail address and password you used at Apple). There, select “iPhone Search” and then select “All Devices” at the top. Find your iPhone in the list and click on it. Now click on the “Erase iPhone” item to remotely erase your iPhone. That’s it. Your iPhone will now be erased and cannot be recovered by the buyer with your data.
