Create Apple Watch backup

Want to create an Apple Watch backup to restore your data in case of an emergency? Then this easy-to-understand guide is just right for you. First, we’ll show you how to create a backup and which data is backed up in the first place. Then we will show you how to set up an automatic backup and last but not least, how to restore your data in case of an emergency. Let’s go!

How do I create an Apple Watch backup?

If you use your Apple Watch extensively, you’ll want to make sure that all your data is backed up in case of doubt. After all, it can always happen that the watch gives up the ghost or is stolen. Then it’s a comforting feeling to know that you can easily restore the data.

Apple Watch Backup erstellen

Compared to other Apple devices, the Apple Watch does not back up itself. In order to create an Apple Watch backup, the Apple Watch must be paired with an iPhone. If it is, the iPhone will take care of backing up your Apple Watch.

So if both devices are in proximity, the data from the watch will be transferred to the iPhone and backed up from there with automatically. If you unhook your Apple Watch from the iPhone (because you want to sell it, for example), then the backup is also triggered automatically and can be transferred to the new Apple Watch from the iPhone.

What data is backed up?

Of course, it’s comforting to know that an Apple Watch backup is automatically created in the background. That way, you don’t have to worry about it. However, it would be interesting to know which data is backed up in the background – and which is not.

This data is automatically backed up by the Apple Watch via the iPhone:

  • App-specific data and settings (e.g. maps, routes, settings for the mail, calendar, stock and weather apps)
  • Arrangement of apps on your home screen
  • Watch personalizations (e.g. watch face)
  • System settings (e.g. message settings, brightness, sound, time zone, etc.)
  • Data from the Health and Fitness app (e.g., workout history, awards, etc.)
  • Synced Apple Music (e.g. playlists, albums, etc.)
  • Synced photo albums
  • Messages (but only if “Messages in iCloud” is enabled)

However, there is also some data that is not backed up. This is mainly for security reasons:

  • Pairings with Bluetooth devices (they need to be reconnected)
  • Apple Pay credit and debit cards (these are stored locally for security reasons and cannot be backed up)
  • Code for the Apple Watch (the code is stored on the watch for security reasons)

You can see that almost all data and settings are backed up. Excluded are security-related settings that are stored locally on the device and are therefore not transferred.

How to create an Apple Watch backup

You already learned earlier in the article that the data of the Apple Watch is backed up via the iPhone as well. Therefore, in order to create an Apple Watch backup, the iPhone must also be backed up. Only then the data of your watch will be backed up

So, you should be sure that iPhone backup is enabled and happens regularly in the background. Then you just need to make sure that your Apple Watch and iPhone are nearby, connected to the same Wi-Fi, and all Apple Watch updates and iPhone updates are installed.

Restore an Apple Watch backup

If you decided to get a new Apple Watch – or had to decide because the old one broke – then you can restore your data from the backup. This way, your new watch will be ready to go again in no time, with all your data and settings right at your fingertips, just like you’re used to.

To restore the data from your iPhone back to the Apple Watch, proceed as follows:

  1. First, bring your iPhone close to your Apple Watch and activate Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both devices
  2. Now turn on your Apple Watch by pressing and holding the side button on the watch. The watch will start when you see the Apple logo.
  3. To pair the Apple Watch with your iPhone, tap “Start Pairing” on both devices
  4. Now you have to make sure that you don’t select “Set up as new device”, but instead click “Restore from backup”. This is the only way to restore your data.
  5. Hold the iPhone camera over the Apple Watch display to start pairing
  6. Now log in with your Apple ID
  7. Now the last saved state of the Apple Watch will be restored. This may take some time.

This is how easy it is to restore your Apple Watch data if your watch breaks or is stolen.
