What does the power saving mode do on the iPhone?
It happens quite often that you are on the road and suddenly notice that the battery on your iPhone is almost empty. Either there is no power outlet in sight or you don’t have time to wait until the iPhoneis charged again.
Fortunately, there’s the power saving mode on the iPhone for that. When you turn this on, your iPhone uses less power and thus lasts longer. For it to work, the smartphone throttles the performance of some functions, so it may run them slower or even disable them altogether.
This affects, for example, checking emails in the background, automatic downloads or even updating iCloud photos. Should you own an iPhone 12, then it also disables the 5G connection. In addition, background updates for apps will also be restricted, so you might no longer receive notifications from WhatsAppand co. Visual effects are also throttled to prevent power-hungry animations.
These restrictions ensure that the battery will last for a while. At least until you can recharge your iPhone.

Activate power saving mode on iPhone
To enable power saving mode on iPhone, we go through your smartphone’s settings. The activation is done in a few steps and works like this:
- Open the “Settings” app on the iPhone
- Scroll to “Battery” and click on it
- Activate the switch at the top for “Power saving mode”. The slider will then light up green.
Now the power saving mode on the iPhone is activated and ready to use. You can see that it is on because the battery icon at the top right of the screen turns yellow.
Turn off power saving mode on iPhone
Were you able to recharge your battery and notice that the power saving mode is still activated? Then you can easily turn it off and there are two ways to do so:
Deactivate power saving mode automatically
The power saving mode on the iPhone always switches off as soon as you have reached a charge level of 80% again. You will then receive a message informing you of this. If you still want to use the power saving mode, you can activate it again. To do so, simply follow the instructions described above.
Deactivate power-saving mode manually
Maybe you’re halfway through charging your iPhone and know that it doesn’t have to last forever. In that case, you can manually turn off the power-saving mode ahead of time.
Here’s how to do that:
- Open the app “Settings” on the iPhone
- Scroll to the item “Battery” and click on it
- Deactivate the switch at the top of “Power saving mode”. The slider is then displayed with a gray background.
Now the power saving mode on the iPhone is turned off again and all functions, such as background updating or automatic mail retrieval, work as usual.

have iPhone power saving mode always active (permanently)
Maybe you like this clever feature and want to activate it permanently. Especially with older iPhones, the power saving mode can help you to get through the whole day with the battery.
The results of the power saving mode on the iPhone are remarkable. In our tests, we found that the iPhone often only had 5-10% battery left in the evening in normal mode – sometimes even less. With activated power-saving mode, the battery was still charged to around 50% in the evening. Thus, it can be worthwhile to always have the mode active and thus last much longer with one battery charge.
Basically, you can activate the power-saving mode directly in the morning and always have it active. However, as soon as you recharge the iPhone and exceed the 80% charge threshold, the mode turns off again. However, there is a trick with which you can always have the power saving mode active: A shortcut.
Setting up a shortcut for automatically activating the power-saving mode
Shortcuts are small intelligent procedures that are executed automatically. So we’re about to create a sequence that will ensure that power saving mode is activated as soon as you unplug your phone. And it goes like this:
- Open the app “Shortcuts”.
- Click on “Automation” at the bottom.
- Now select the “+” at the top right and then “Create personal automation”.
- Scroll to the bottom and click on “Charger”. Uncheck “Connected” and check “Disconnected”. Then confirm at the top right with “Next”.
- Now select “Add action” and click in the search field. Now enter “Power saving mode” and click on the result “Configure power saving mode”. Confirm with “Next” in the upper right corner.
- Now uncheck “Confirm before running” in the view, so that the iPhone activates the power saving mode automatically and you don’t have to confirm it first.
- With a click on “Done” in the upper right corner you have finished everything.
From now on, your iPhone will automatically switch back to power saving mode when you unplug it in the morning.
Is power saving mode harmful to the iPhone?
Are you wondering if power saving mode could be harmful to your iPhone? If so, we can put your mind at ease. There is no impact on the battery or the device itself. It only turns off very battery-intensive functions so that the device consumes less power. This shutdown means that the iPhone uses 40% less battery on average and can thus last longer.

Basically, the only decision left is whether you can do without the missing functions, such as automatically checking emails in the background or the disabled background update of the apps. In any case, you will not harm the device.
The power-saving mode on the iPhone is really practical. If you suddenly notice that the battery level is already very low and you still don’t have any power available in the foreseeable future, you can simply activate the power-saving mode. This uses about 40% less battery, so the device can last noticeably longer. For older iPhones with little remaining battery life, it even makes sense to think about keeping the mode active permanently. We explain how this is done with a trick further up in the article.
