Apple Watch size is such a difficult decision, as with no other device from the manufacturer. After all, it is not only an issue of handiness in everyday life, but also an aesthetic question. When compared in size, the larger model can look too clunky on the wrist. That’s why we asked ourselves: which size is right for you and what criteria should you use to make your purchase decision? In this article, we’ll look at the display and battery size and give a recommendation for the Apple Watch
size and strap length. Let’s get started. In diesem Artikel:
Apple Watch: Which size 40 or 44?
Apple now has several Apple Watches on offer. The Series 3 remains on sale, while the new SE and Series 6 models
join it. The Apple Watch Series 3 still comes in the sizes 38 mm or 42 mm. The new SE and Series 6 models, on the other hand, come in 40 mm and 44 mm. This immediately raises the question: Is the Apple Watch size simply a matter of taste or does the larger model just look clunky on my wrist?
Many blogs say that the smaller model is the Apple Watch size for women and the larger model for men. However, we think that this is only valid to a limited extent, since the size of the wrist is more important, but also the weight of the watch and the battery life. The good news in advance: Functionally, there are no differences between the different sizes. Let’s take a differentiated look at the comparison.

Differences in the display
There is, of course, a real difference in Apple Watch size between the Series 3 and the new models. These are 30 percent larger and thus offer much more space. The display of the predecessor is rectangular, while the display of the new models is rounded. The difference between the displays is enormous and should be taken into account in our opinion if you have the money.

There is no difference between the 42 mm and 44 mm models of the newer Apple Watches in terms of the display. The only thing worth mentioning here is that texts and pictures can be displayed slightly larger on the 44 mm model. Thus, those who prefer a larger font should opt for the 44 mm model in terms of Apple Watch size.
Differences in the battery
The situation is completely different when it comes to the battery size. Even though Apple states the battery life of all models at 18 hours, there is a difference. Thus, those who go for the Apple Watch size with 44 mm get a larger battery. This can have a positive effect on the battery life. Even though the larger screen consumes more power, the battery life can last longer in standby mode or in dark mode scenarios (apps whose background is mostly black).
On the other hand, the larger case with bigger battery also leads to a slight weight increase. It is 30.5 g in the aluminum version of the watch compared to 36.5 g in the 40 mm and 44 mm models of the Series 6. Interestingly, you can feel the difference, even if it seems marginal at first. However, since the direct comparison is usually lacking, this point can be neglected.

Suitable Apple Watch size for the wrist
It is obvious that you assign the Apple Watch size according to your personal feeling about your wrist. In principle, however, there is nothing to stop you from buying the larger model even if you have a thin wrist. In the end, the watch is too small for it to protrude over the wrist. With the protruding wristband, however, it could then still happen in the overall picture.

On the other hand, the smaller version can also look lost on a large wrist.
The bottom line is that this is probably more a matter of taste than something to recommend. We recommend you measure your wrist circumference. If the result is less than 180 mm, then a 40 mm variant would seem more reasonable for aesthetic reasons. Conversely, if your wrist circumference is over 180 mm, we’d recommend the larger variant. You will then have a larger display, a larger battery and the watch will not look lost on your wrist. However, it is quite feasible to wear the larger variant on a smaller wrist and thus also enjoy the advantages of display size and battery life.
Determine Apple Watch wristband size
When choosing the Apple Watch size, you should know that the smaller model basically ships with a wristband of 130-200 mm. The larger model, on the other hand, comes with a strap of 140-220 mm.
So, if you have very thin wrists, the centimeter difference can possibly be decisive. Of course, the opposite is also true for large wrists.
On the other hand, if you want to use the larger model, then there is a good option for you: all wristbands fit all models of the Apple Watch. So you could think about buying the larger model and combining it with a shorter wristband. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a wristband from Apple. You can find great models here, for example:

Apple Watch size: Our recommendation
Our recommendation on the Apple Watch size is that you should be less worried about choosing a model that is too big with a small wrist. The advantages of the significantly larger display and longer battery life are not negligible. The disadvantages of the marginally higher weight, on the other hand, can be neglected in our view. If the included wristband is too long, you can easily replace it.
If you are absolutely unsure, you can also try out the Apple Watch in an Apple Store near you.
